Each wheel is placed on our on-board balancing machine which spins it at speed. Sensors detect exactly where the weight distribution is off and by how much. Even a few grams of imbalance at motorway speeds creates the vibrations drivers feel through the steering wheel or seat. The machine removes the guesswork entirely.
Counterweights are attached at the precise points the machine identifies. The wheel is then re-spun to confirm the reading is at zero. If it is not, the weights are adjusted until it is. Only then does the wheel go back on the car, torqued to your manufacturer’s specification.
Every 10,000 miles is a reasonable general guide. But you should also get it checked after hitting a pothole, or any impact that was harder than expected.
