This is where experience matters. A lot. The wrong technique can strip the nut, damage the stud, or gouge your alloy wheel. We’ve seen all three from DIY attempts and even from garages that don’t specialise in locking wheel nut removal.
First, we identify the exact nut type. Rotating collar, keyed socket, internal spline, hexagonal. Each one needs a different approach and the wrong tool on the wrong nut causes damage. We assess before we touch anything, and if a puncture repair is also needed we handle both in the same visit.
Roughly 60% of locking wheel nut problems are caused by garages using air guns instead of torque wrenches. Air guns over-tighten the nut, stretch the threading, and make removal with the original key nearly impossible. If your locking nuts have been over-tightened, we recommend replacing the full set after removal.
Hammering a socket onto a worn locking nut damages the outer surface and makes professional extraction tools harder to grip. One failed attempt can turn a 15 minute job into a much longer one. If you also need all season tyres or performance tyres changed on the same visit, call us first and we sort everything together.
One nut: about 15 minutes. All four: 30 to 60 minutes depending on type and condition. For van tyres and larger vehicles the process can take slightly longer due to higher torque settings used during fitting. If someone else has already had a go and left a socket stuck on there, add a bit more time. We sort that too.
